SD14 at night clubs..

I’ve started to take photos at night clubs here in Göteborg for a online magazine called www.aveny.se - my first night has come to an end and first images are up. I have never done something like this before and I must say I was a bit nervous. Not because of meeting people but because of equipment. I heard I needed at least ISO400 and some wide fast angle lens to do the job.

Vimmel / Lounges

I wanted to do this my way and equipped myself like this: SD14 + 30mm + 500DG flash + a paper bounce card on top of the flash (home made) - the flash pointed straight up and only reflecting light would hit the subject.

ISO at 100 and M mode with an aperture of F1.6 and shutter speed of 1/4th of a second. I tried ISO50 but highlights was too much clipped. I will try ISO200 and 400 next time. Just to see what difference it makes.

Developed all using Raw Developer 1.72 and lucky me the new version just came out with great reds and wonderful dynamics. It was pure joy to adjust colors.

The 30mm was set at F1.6 and I was really relying on AF as it was way to dark to really see anything useful in the view finder. I took a quick look and more than 90% was perfect focus and by that I mean perfect. NO shot was trashed because of out of focus problems. This is a huge different from my 30mm before calibration. Even my Flash worked like magic. Bam Bam Bam.. :D Before this first night I wasn’t sure this would a good time for the SD14 - but clearly I was wrong. All images could probably be printed at A1 and look amazing.

SD10 revisited.

Man in the village.Old man in Village #2

I tend to forget that I lived in China for a very long time and during that time I took a huge amount of pictures all in raw. Since then lots have changed and new raw developers has popped up such as Lightroom, Sigma Photo Pro 3, Darkroom and Raw Developer. I decided to test one of them and this is SD10 images with the Sigma 30mm lens converted using Raw Developer. Click each image for a full size version. If you have time you can dig and find the old versions from back then. :)

Awesome 30mm + RD

The 30mm is awesome. Both pictures are ISO50, the one of dad was badly underexposed and thanks to the ISo50 it had enough to be brought back to life. I used Raw Developer for both shots. Click for full quality. (worth it)

Mushrooms yet again. :D

I went out with mom yesterday (sunday) and we decided to pick some mushrooms again. Linn was working which was too bad, nature showed us her very good side. Weather was British and colors very strong - and light low. grrr - sun actually came through one or two times and I tried to do something when it showed but we often sat in the car when it happened.

Svamp plockning

These are developed using Lightroom, I did develop side by side with SPP3 but Iwasn’t sure which one I liked the best so I went for the easy ride. I did try Raw Developer again and I still like the way it handles colors but it’s so much fiddling to get there. Too much work and too little time.

I will tomorrow end my “product” job - it’s now done and we’re very happy with the result. Next up is a week long real estate photo session.

A little something from yesterday

Went to a market this weekend, weather was terrible. I took lots of photos of old tractors, engines, horses etc and I might post some more later but this one first (I know I posted some more, but I wasn’t satisfied with colors, still working on my SPP skills). Full size for download. SPP3 used as developer. Aperture used for adding watermark. I know, a bit boring. :)

Now I’ll eat something nice with my Linn in Göteborg. Jaij!

Visiting Per Bäck | Art of Macro

Per Bäck photography

Per Bäck photographyPer Bäck photographyA couple of weeks ago a senior named Per Bäck and his lovely wife comes to my garden and shared a cup of coffee, they’re both young looking so I was very surprised when they told me they’re both a bit over 80 - they had this look and way that told me that they had something more - something to teach. (I think they saw the same thing, but other way around - you know hopeless case sort of thing) While talking we realize that we have an interest in common and that is the love of photography. (I like to think I saw it in their eyes).

Per told me that he’s been taking photos of flowers and that his wife would look them up in fauna-pedias etc. Sometimes they would search for a special rare something or do experiment to find out how they work.

See below image showing this small little thing that is said to find its way on animal hair and move on - Per made this experiment by using his wifes hair and see if it worked as planned. :)

Per Bäck photography

He used Yashicas and lot’s of extension tubes and flip-floped lenses and homemade focus assist holder he was able to take something like 10:1. Quite amazing and very difficult. He said he sometimes had to work an hour only to get focus right for ONE single shot.

Per Bäck photography

Above picture: With a 2x extension tube + 200mm lens + flip-flopped 50mm lens + you get terrible shutter speeds and VERY very small part in focus. very shallow DOF.

Per Bäck photographyIt was terribly hard to focus with the focus ring alone so he built his own focus assistant. A beautiful wood + Plexiglas creation to support his work.

After being at his home in Alingsås - drinking coffee and eating delicious sandwiches I have this urge to take macros. Strange huh? Not very. Problem is that I don’t have the equipment (read lenses) nor the full knowledge how to pull it together in order to get closer than my current macros says and that’s only 1:1 - pretty far from 10:1. Any good inputs from you guys out there?! Is there any possibility to use Yashica lenses on a SD camera with Pentax converter? They’re not screw mount or anything.

Per Bäck photography

All pictures in this article is taken with SD14 using Sigma 30mm lens. ISO400 used most of the time. To see two more photos of cameras and flowers:

XiaoGang and Maria wedding pictures

Click above picture to get full size view. Lens: 12-24 @12mm with some plastic in front of the lens.

[edit, text updated #2] We had a great time at the Wedding and I shot something like 700 photos - 83 of them are now published. Their full names was Zeng Xiao Gang and Maria Ådahl - the new name is unknown. [EDIT: Putt Mr and Mrs before, no other changes are made] :D I was too busy taking pictures to listen. Maria, maybe you could add a comment about it?! These pictures will now find its way into a picture book.

click for all 83The black corners a due to a filter thread that I use sometimes with my wide angles. (I got it very recently) It’s something that could be described as a “sky saver” a faded one stop saving plastic. I felt very happy about using it because it gave me the feeling of 6×6 (you can easily see the black left / right frame on some pictures). It’s much more fun to balance the picture this way (and I got more powerful skies at the same time).

I still wonder why there isn’t any 35mm digital SLR’s that has a square image. That would be so nice! You would never have to think in terms of landscape / portrait any longer. Just like in the good old days!

Raw Developer - X3F vs DNG

I did a quick sweep in my lightroom Norway directory and found some images that I here use as examples of what the differences are between Raw Developer DNG and Raw developer X3F. I found that Lightrooms way of handling colors was pretty much the same as Raw Developer + x3f’s converted to DNG’s. ISO100 - 400. and some as close as 500%. Images always sharpened the same way and if possible I used eye dropper for white balance (clouds or snow etc). DNG mode in RD will only use RGB sliders. No temp slider. So it wasn’t that easy to make them look the same.

Left: DNG - Right X3F

[img] Finally Sven & Jeanettes wedding pictures.

I’ve been fighting with my new monitor today. It’s a used Lacie 22 blue IV and I’m using a spider2 (thanks Thunderlance) to calibrate it. But I did it when it was bright and well, I wasn’t very satisfied with the result and I’ve been draging pictures back and forth between my laptops screen and the Lacie in order to see what it could look like IRL.. hehe Feels like I should only work in darkness with CRT’s..

This time I decided to give Camera Raw CS3 a chance and it worked pretty well. Good color control but a bit noisier. I never turned on noise reduction, maybe that’s why! ;) Black and whites looks far better using SPP, I think I will renmake those later.

ISO ranging from 100 to 800. Flash used in church sometimes. oh, Thanks Daniel Premberg for helping me with that reflector. :D

Lenses: All kinds of.
