[edit] Helping dad to make a model of a house that he’s thinking about building. Downloaded sketchup yesterday and this is the result. I had to go out and try to measure everything. it was too cumbersome to do this exact so I measured my steps and took many walks. :D The software is so much fun, free and very very easy to learn!
The wanted building is the one furtherest away in this picture (with garage).
One more note. By using the correct north point and setting your country and city you can actually play with the day and time of the year to see how shadows interact with your model. THAT is fun! True fun! I’m now thinking about doing this with building’s I wanna take photos of in order to know what time of the day that would give the best shadow play! :D (Churches etc)

One tip: darkest shadows at night :D Can sketch also simulate clouds and rainy days? My impression was until today you are more practical, just shooting and making the best… I am curious about your experiment based photography in future. Please don’t forget to inform me :)
Nice to see you enjoy it! Its really a great nifty little program. (That works for the mac as well as the pc!)
spalbird:
The shadow feature is handy, but very rudimentary. Only one light source (the sun) no reflections. Transparent materials do exist (for windows and such).
Fore real renders you need to export the model to some external app. like PovRAY or such.
