Pearl book layout preview
The “pearl book? is a project I do for a pearl jewelry designing friend. (young and coming) The book will be ca 16×18cm and have about 60 pages. Will be printed on high gloss 125g (plus gloss) chinese style paper to bring cost down. 60 pages in this size is exactly what you need to fill one standard A0 print sheet. :) Oh, Plus a cover in 300g paper from the same producer.

Now I need some feedback.

I have done about 50 pages so far and I selected some representative spreads for you to look at. Keep in mind that these images are going to be folded in the middle.

I started with the layout yesterday and I’m not clear about many smaller things such as where to put the logo and in what size, how to put the text (which tells what jewelry it is etc) But for now I want to hear what you have to say.

Btw, what do you think of the logo?! Also my creation.

 See all 13 spreads!

Camera: Sigma SD10 Lens: Sigma 30mm EX and 105mm EX
Model: Liu Dong Yun aka Linn

Remember that these are SPEADS. (folded on middle so to speak)

  1. I got some great response by private mail and some changes will be done. Feedback are still wanted thought.

Carl, many of the images themselves are sumptuous, much beauty – should be very good for this.

I am sure you will get better advice from the graphics pros who read here, but will put some thoughts.

Although thinking you are being quite clever in your ways with elements spanning the booklet fold, I still wonder about one or two.

By count, it seems there may be issues on 3, and 5 – but maybe you have actually considered very carefully, and there is a pretty narrow fold, and then I think these are going to work. Seeing them to full scale and trying the fold area either in printed reality, or with something like a right-size dark rectangle to block the fold area in Photoshop is probably the only way to tell. 5 is probably the trickiest of all your images.

You probably know I am going to suggest the choker image of your male friend may be out of place – for style, and also as it doesn’t fit the color feel of the rest. Yet maybe you get away with it if your client likes it, who can say ;).

Anyway, there is very much to like about these images. They are not simple, and this is very good – draws one in. They are rich each differently, while fitting together. Again, very good, and draws one to look at more than a few pages.

The logo I don’t find the comments for, and I know these are very tough, so I hope someone else is helping you here. Even the collamin.com font choice is a very local thing, surely. I could wish that the logo itself is set lower on the last image, so it is more balanced below Linn’s hand.

I like the doubled use in the seventh – girl on street, close to pearls on wrist — and that this is done only once in the pamphlet.

Again, very much subtly to like here. It seems very good work to me.

    WOW Carl,
FANTASTIC!…the photos are dead on and though the guy with the pearl choker throws me off it is still a very well designed piece. My only concern is the logo – very cool, very playful, very well designed – but I don’t know if it fully conveys the classiness of the pearls…I see something with Berkley/Futura Bold mix – yeah I know kinda conservative…
just my ¥2 worth – if you would like I can send you a rough I played around with…

All in all it’s a showstopping piece of work!!!
    Cheers,

  4. Clive: Folding is not a real problem, I know quite well by now how close I can get away. haha.. But I will in the last minute do some extra measurement to make sure I’m on the safe side.

The guy will be inside BUT I’m thinking to put him on the last spread as the chocking end.. Do you think I could get away with that?! :D

And yes, the logo on the last image.. I might put it on a different spot or just make it smaller. Thanks a bunch for your advice in these delicate matter. Makes me very happy.

  5. The Chebb: Thanks and YES please send me your version of the logo. If I find it more fit I might change. (or if the designer wants to) I chose these fonts for the mix between old and new. a little as for my images style. They’re supposed to breath something old and new.

and hehe, a Showstopping piece of work.. :D

Btw, I’m very happy to see that you guys are so brave and straight forward.

    Hi Carl,
I haven’t forgotten you – my Mac has picked this time to have “issues”. Our MIS folks performed a 1 day and half worth of tests – the final verdict the Mac has to go to Apple for some therapy…I would like to send you the artwork…which method to get to you?

BTW I got my 30mm today – I’m freakin’ happy (Doing the happy dance with my feet under the table!!WOOHAHAHAHAHA!) Hopefully the 10-20 will show up before the weekend is out so I can get me some shots since the weather is clearing up….finally!
    Cheers,
    TheChebb!
